How To Make The Most Of Your 2016 To Advance Your Career In 2017

There’s a new year coming! Before you start celebrating with a glass of bubbles and the midnight countdown, now is a great time to reflect on the year that has past, to all you have achieved, the goals you have delivered and yes, to reassess where you are going.

You’ve probably heard the cliché “Insanity: doing the same thing over and over expecting different results”.  Well rather than chase lunacy wasting time with misdirection and lack of development, spend time asking yourself the hard questions.

Here's 8 hard-hitting questions to help you move forward in 2017:

  1. On a scale of 1-10 how satisfied were you with 2016?
  2. What were your biggest failings or mistakes this past year – career wise – that were preventable or avoidable?
  3. Why are you where you are?
  4. What kind of criticism have you received lately?
  5. What are you willing to change?
  6. If you could do anything with your career, what would you choose to do?
  7. Who or what stands in your way?
  8. What new skills/habits do you need to cultivate to progress your career to the next stage?

Whether you are 30, 40, 50 or 60 – the smart one's re-evaluate what they are doing, where they are going and how they want to get there.  They take proactive steps to be a master of their own destiny.  They identify what their own personal strengths are along with any areas that require development.  They don’t wait for their managers to lead them to the water, but rather create their own pathway as the maker of their own fate.

And this post year review is relevant to all, not just at an individual level, but at a team level and at a strategic level encompassing the entire organisation.

As an employee consider if you have maximised your opportunities – have you given that discretionary effort that gets noticed by the better employers and rewarded through recognition and possibly reward, be it training, financial, additional benefits or promotion?

As a leader, have you taken the time to notice what your people have achieved? Have you identified the learning opportunities and had honest conversations with your teams to set up 2017 for success?   For those people who are customer facing, have you listened to feedback as the voice of your customer?  As a leader have you inspired and motivated, have you listened to and engaged your people so they want to give that ‘discretionary effort’, and so the circle turns.

For those of you who have not yet made the time, we are only in November and there is still time.  For those who don’t care, start your recruitment planning as these great people have ready access to hiring organisations who will care – who will appreciate, engage, reward, motivate and inspire.
