Try before you buy

Which is the best match? When it comes to recruitment,
sometimes it’s better to ‘try before you buy’.

Many employers we speak with are understandably nervous about taking on permanent staff. When searching for the perfect match, they frequently ask themselves the same questions:

  • How do I know if I’m choosing the right candidate
  • If I get it wrong, will I be stuck with my poor choice?
  • Is there a better way?

Often, the answer to the last question is a resounding “Yes!”

One solution is to hire your preferred candidate(s) on a casual basis or on a fixed contract. That way you get to see what they’re like before committing to a permanent contract. If it turns out that your candidate is a good fit, then great, hire them as a permanent staff member.

If, on the other hand, things aren’t working out so well, you have nothing to lose. You don’t have to renew the contractor or continue with a casual beyond a reasonable notice period. And you might be doing them a favour by releasing them to a more suitable role.
