Where Is The Love? Project Passion.

Seriously, how fast has this year gone? It feels like I blinked and it went from February to June and now we have somehow landed in the last month of the year. Silly season is here, Christmas trees are aplenty and work parties are in full swing.

Life moves really quickly so why work in a job, or even a career, you don’t love? As the new year (with endless possibilities) approaches, ask yourself one important question…

Are you passionate about what you do?

And by that I don’t mean you have to skip into the office every day smelling the roses along the way, we all have days and sometimes weeks that are difficult.

No job will ever be perfect but are you still excited by what you do and what you hope to achieve in your career?

If not, then now is the time to start thinking about what it is you would like to do and start making changes so that you are happy and fulfilled. If you’ve lost the love for what you do it could be obvious not only to your colleagues but to the business too.

I meet with talent every day and I can tell you that passionate people stand out a mile away! Why? Because they can articulate what they want to achieve in their career. They know what they want, or even perhaps what they don’t want, and they are driven to set and meet their own career goals.

Passionate leaders inspire and lift teams; they are advocates for their people and not only provide mentorship to staff but do whatever they can to help people achieve success. Colleagues who are happy and engaged are fun to be around, bring people together and entertain ideas that are outside of their “role responsibilities”.

I love what I do.... and I want you to love what you do too!

Think it’s time for a change?

Here are some tips to help get you on your way...

  • Don’t let fear hold you back i.e. “but it’s too hard to change jobs” and “I don’t know where to start”.
  • Don’t make it bigger than it is. It won’t happen overnight but you can take small steps to make positive changes to get you moving in the right direction.
  • Network and talk to people (or leaders) who align with your interests and passions. There are hundreds of groups you can join online - that are free! Sign up to attend one of the regular events to meet new people, get insights or learn more about a topic, industry or role.
  • Communicate! Tell your manager what you want. It could be that you would like to lead a team, get a promotion, or change job titles. Articulate where you would like to take your career and what your goals are. There may be an opportunity that presents within your team or another part of the business more aligned to what you would like to do.

Have a conversation with your recruitment consultant about your goals not only in the short term but the longer term too. Your consultant can provide insight into the market, suggest how you can get started or perhaps come up with some creative solutions in terms of a role change to allow you to gain the experience you need.

Try something new, take risks and put your hand up to tackle challenges that may seem unattainable or fall outside of your role. Even if you don’t succeed, what you learn from the experience is worth so much more than not giving it a go. You will grow through making mistakes and also learn what you do or don’t like at the same time.

If, however, you are happy and your career is moving in the right direction take some time to appreciate all that you have accomplished this year. Sometimes we focus too much on what we didn’t achieve and it's important to reflect on our successes.

So celebrate all that you have done and make 2017 your best year yet!
